The minute most people hear the word “budget”, they think deprivation, suffering, and agony.

It’s almost like putting on a pair of jeans 3 sizes too small, laying on your bed, wrestling with the zipper. So if that’s you, don’t worry! Learning how to budget like a pro is EASY - if you just understand a few basics and are committed to the process.

First of all, you have to change the way you see budgeting.

Budgeting is not like having a pair of handcuffs around your wrists, preventing you from touching your wallet. A budget is actually freedom!

A budget is a plan towards getting the life you want. It’s allowing yourself to dream big and then making an easy plan to achieve it.

Nothing great has ever been accomplished without a plan. So if you’re ready, here we go.

Decide what “freedom” means to you. Is freedom being able to pay your car off? To go to Europe on a vacation? Redecorate your house? Set your goal of what you want to achieve so you can have a goal to get excited about!

Plan to spend and enjoy your money.

Budgeting can feel like delayed gratification, but in actuality, your gratification is instant. It puts you in control - like if you’ve ever been car sick, the best way to stop the sickness is to be the driver. When you have a budget and commit to it, you are in the driver's seat. You are in control.

Budgeting is actually fun. It’s a project you can get creative with. There are so many free tools - like Mint by Intuit - or you can use an excel spreadsheet, or if you want to really get basic, you can use a piece of paper. It doesn’t matter how it’s done, as long as it’s done.

The first thing you should do is look at what you spend the most money on now. Your current money habits will reveal your personal values, and those are important. So if you belong to a gym and spend a lot on healthy food, you probably value your health.

Knowing what your values are will help you prioritize where you want your money to go and ALLOW you to spend more on the things that bring you the most joy.

Next, make a list of your actual expenses. Break your expenses out into different tiers:

All Income = income from your job, a garage sale, birthday gifts, etc.

Monthly expenses = mortgage, rent, utilities, debts, groceries, transportation, clothing, etc.

Entertainment & Non-Essentials - going out to eat, concerts, travel, Netflix, etc.

Now, instead of trying to do it all at once and expect yourself to be perfect (where most people quit), just track your expenses for a month. This is where an app like Mint works because it automatically tracks your expenses.

Then, schedule a day at the end of the month for you to look at your results. This is a reality check you have to commit to. Force yourself to look at what you spend your money on and see where you’ve overspent, where you could cut back, and how far you are from your goals.

This reality check may be hard at first, but remember the end goal is FREEDOM and your dream life. That’s worth a little discipline, wouldn’t you say?

Instead of feeling deprived or overwhelmed when you see how much money you spend, how can you empower yourself to have more wealth?

Here are a few questions to ask yourself that will set you on the path towards your financial freedom.

  1. What can you cut back on that is low on your personal values scale? Did you need that new outfit that is still sitting in your closet, with tags on? Could you have cooked dinner those nights rather than going out to a restaurant you don't even remember?

  2. Where can you make more money on the side? Could you do some virtual consulting on the side? Can you invest in real estate? How can you create some passive income? Earning extra money is easy and adds to your bottom line.

Once you decide on those 2 things, keep going! Awareness and regularly tracking your expenses and income eventually becomes a daily habit! It becomes something you naturally do, and just by being aware of it, you increase your value and worth.

So I want to ask you, what is the thing you want to have money for? What is your financial goal so you can have more of your dream life? And what steps will you take next to get it?
